posted 06/27/2010 Chicago United teams makes a tremendous showing at NISL US Club Cup this Spring. This season, 7 teams were entered from CUFC with U10 Blue, U10 Black, U11, U16 and U17 all advancing out of group stage into the double elimination knock out phase of the tourney. Of these teams, U10 Black, U11 and U17 each made it to the Cup finals that took place this past week. Here are the results:
U10 Black: Under the guidance of Coach Charlie, U10 Black takes the NISL Club Cup for the second year in a row going undefeated in both years. This year the boys ran the table with a +8 goal differential during group play and +14 GD during elimination phase with a 6-2 domination of Sockers FC in the finals.
U11: With Coach Ross at the helm, U11 entered the tourney with over half the team new to the club. The team did well after a loss in semifinals but taking advantage of the double elimination format returned to the finals vs Elgin Pumas. U11 fell short of taking the Cup with a heartbreaking 2-3 overtime PK shootout loss that proved that this relatively new team will be a superb contender for the years to come.
U17: Coach Minos is to be lauded for his success with the entire CUFC High School program including his guidance of the high-powered U17 team who went undefeated and captured the Cup with a convincing 3-0 victory over Elk Grove Arsenal in the finals.
The Cup provides an opportunity for top level teams to compete in a season long tournament that runs parallel to the regular NISL season, similar to the FA Cup in England running parallel to the regular Premiership League play. CUFC is one of only 2 clubs throughout the entire NISL league to have at least 3 teams reach the finals of the NISL Club Cup, an incredible accomplishment for a club in its 3rd year of existence. Congratulations to U10 Black, U11 and U17!
